摘要: As the advent of precision cosmology, the Hubble constant ($H_0$) inferred from the Lambda Cold Dark Matter fit to the Cosmic Microwave Background data is increasingly in tension with the measurements from the local distance ladder. To approach its real value, we need more independent methods to measure, or to make constraint of, the Hubble constant. In this paper, we apply a plain method, which is merely based on the Friedman-Lema\^itre-Robertson-Walker cosmology together with geometrical relations, to constrain the Hubble constant by proper motions of radio components observed in AGN twin-jets. Under the assumption that the ultimate ejection strengths in both sides of the twin-jet concerned are intrinsically the same, we obtain a lower limit of the $H_{\rm 0,min}=51.5\pm2.3\,\rm km\,s^{-1}\,Mpc^{-1}$ from the measured maximum proper motions of the radio components observed in the twin-jet of NGC 1052.

摘要: This paper explores the correlation between the fractional variation of the ionizing continuum and C iv broad absorption lines (BALs) with different ionization levels. Our results reveal anti-correlations between fractional variation of the continuum and fractional equivalency width (EW) variation of the C iv BALs without Al iii BAL/mini-BALs at corresponding velocities, providing evidence for the widespread influence of the ionizing continuum variability on the variation of HiBALs. Conversely, for C iv BALs accompanied by Al iii BAL/mini-BALs (LoBAL groups), no significant correction is detected. The absence of such a correlation does not rule out the possibility that variations in these low-ionization lines are caused by ionizing continuum variability, but rather suggests the influence of BAL saturation to some extent. This saturation effect is reflected in the distribution of the fractional EW variation, where the C iv BAL group accompanied by Al iii BAL has a smaller standard deviation for the best-fitting Gaussian component than the two BAL groups without Al iii BAL. However, the distribution of fractional variation of their continuum does not show any significant difference. Besides the saturation influence, another potential explanation for the lack of correlations in the LoBAL groups may be the effects of other variability mechanisms besides the ionization change, such as clouds transiting across the line of sight.

摘要: In the comparison with SARS-CoV of 2003, SARS-CoV-2 is extremely well adapted to the human populations and its adaptive shift from the animal host to humans must have been even more extensive. By the blind watchmaker argument, such an adaptive shift can only happen prior to the onset of the current pandemic and with the aid of step-by-step selection. In this view, SARS-CoV-2 could not have possibly evolved in an animal market in a big city and even less likely in a laboratory. Discussions of the origin of SARS-CoV-2 need to factor in the long process of adaptive shift and some models have indeed advanced in that direction.
